Tell
me about Pale Reflections’ parent company – Milestones
in Recovery
Dear friend,
Welcome to our Web site, where you will find lots of
information about eating disorders and, most importantly,
hope and support from others who have been through anorexia,
bulimia, overeating and other illnesses. I would like
now to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about
myself and Pale Reflections.
My interest in eating disorders started in December
1997, when a friend confided in me about her bulimia.
At the time, I wasn’t sure what I could do to help,
so I decided to look up information on the Internet
and find other people to talk to about it. Time went
by and, by the summer of 1998, I had acquired a lot
of information about eating disorders which I wanted
to share with other people.
When Pale Reflections was first conceived in July 1998,
it was only ever intended to be an email newsletter.
It consisted mainly of contributions from subscribers,
such as their stories, poems and other articles. It
also contained links to useful Web sites and book reviews.
The first issue went out to around 80 people in late
July and, from there, the membership base grew and grew.
By September 1998 it was clear that a Web site was needed
to supplement the newsletter and provide general information
on eating disorders and related issues. The first Web
site was much different to the one you see today. It
was pretty basic, with only a few pages of links and
information, as well as an introduction to the newsletter.
The site has undergone several redesigns since, one
in late 1998, another in December 1999 and the design
you see now, which was started in November 2001.
In late 1998 I met my wife, Tara, after she emailed
me having seen the Pale Reflections Web site. She had
been suffering with anorexia and was looking for support.
After many months of conversing with Tara, I flew from
London to San Francisco to meet her in May 1999. And
the rest, as they, is history! We have been married
since March 2000 and now live in California.
As you can see, Pale Reflections has moved on considerably
since 1998. It is now a complete community, where eating
disorder sufferers, professionals and friends &
family can come to for support. Becoming a member is
free of charge and there is no obligation to receive
newsletters or to be contacted by other members.
In October 2003, Pale Reflections was bought by Milestones
in Recovery, a Florida based company offering treatment
programs for eating disorders. Tara and I are delighted
to be working together with Milestones to continue raising
mental health awareness and offering a supportive community
for everyone affected by eating disorders.
I hope you will take the time to look around the site,
browse for information and join us in spreading eating
disorders awareness and offering support to others.
Thank you for visiting our community,
Matt Hayes
